Controlling self-driving cars - US Patent 9566986
When it comes to self-driving cars, the question of who has control—and when—is key. If an unexpected hazard appears, patent 9566986 could help the vehicle sense whether to continue driving autonomously or to hand manual control over to the driver. IBM scientists developed an AI-powered system that could help evaluate the safety of various driving conditions––poor visibility, obstructed road, faulty brakes, etc.––and quickly decide if it’s safer for the driver to take over.

Help researchers smash cancer, through the power of your phone.
The pediatric cancer survival rate has increased from 10% to almost 90% over the last 40 years, but there’s still a lot of work to do—and you can help. Because pediatric cancer changes so rapidly, research is difficult and time-consuming. Smash Childhood Cancer and IBM partnered to accelerate this research with the IBM World Community Grid, an app that lets anyone contribute their unused computing power to scientific research. This has the potential to help screen treatment options for research more quickly. The more of us that join the fight, the more we can help smash childhood cancer together.
